Programmering vrijdag en zondag Culemborg Blues weekend

Naast de traditionele “The Night Before The Day After” is er dit jaar voor het eerst ook een
“The Day After The Night Before”. Op vrijdagavond voor Culemborg Blues spelen er ook
dit jaar in verschillende horeca gelegenheden bands voor bezoekers die al in de stad
zijn voor de festivaldag , maar natuurlijk ook om de Culemborgers alvast in de stemming
te brengen. Ook dit jaar is er weer een ruime keuze in de diverse muzieksoorten.
Er spelen 9 bands in 7 verschillende horecagelegenheden. Op zondagmiddag kan men
nog even nagenieten.

Op vrijdag 23 augustus spelen Key 4, The Cash Project en Tommygun in Café De Mart
vanaf 20.00 uur in een drieluik. Key 4, ontstaan uit het “Kids in the Blues” project, en
Tommygun spelen blues en bluesrock, The Cash Project brengt een ode aan…. Johnny Cash.

Ook om 20.00 uur, The Struck Up in de achterzaal van Grand Café de Luifel.
The Struck Up neemt je mee vanaf de warme Mississippi Delta van de jaren 30 naar de
oostkust van de jaren 60. Meer zin in Americana, Indie-pop, Singer-Songwriter?
Het Dieter van der Westen Trio zorgt hiervoor in Restaurant de Streek vanaf 20.30 uur. 

Het duo Frick ‘n’ Man speelt nummers, geïnspireerd op artiesten als Hound Dog Taylor en
Seasick Steve, in Tapperij de Poortwachter. Aanvang rond 21.00 uur. Tevens start dan
Sweet Mary Jane in Café de Havenmeester. Deze bluesrock band speelt er voor het
3e jaar op rij. Tenslotte speelt vanaf 22.00 uur in Café Den Tollensteghe de bluesrock
formatie La Grange.    

Op zondag 25 augustus kun je vanaf 15.00 uur met de West Coast bluesband
Harp Mitch & Ticket West in Kaffee by ANDRIES het blues weekend afsluiten.

En tussen “The Night Before The Day After” en “The Day After The Night Before” zit
Culemborg Blues. Uiteraard ook van harte aanbevolen!

Eerste namen voor 26e editie Culemborg Blues

Zoals ieder jaar maakt Stichting Culemborg Blues in begin maart de eerste bands bekend voor het jaarlijkse gratis Bluesfestival wat plaats vindt op de vierde zaterdag in augustus. Voor de 26e editie zijn inmiddels vastgelegd: Flavium ( 50 jarig bestaan), The Dynamite Blues Band, Dave Warmerdam Band, The Cards (UK\NL), en Hollands Blauw.

Flavium

50 jaar geleden, in 1969, richtte Anne-Geert Bonder Flavium op. Samen met bassist Eric Bagchus (sinds 1973) is hij de kern van de huidige line-up. Door de decennia heen veroverde de band, met zijn degelijke live reputatie, een prominente plaats in de pop- en blues wereld. Ze worden de  “Nederlands meest consistente bluesband” genoemd en zijn in 2015 opgenomen in de Dutch Blues Hall Of Fame van de Dutch Blues Foundation.

The Dynamite Blues Band

De winnaar van de Dutch Blues Challenge 2018, staat garant voor een explosieve cocktail van Blues, Rhythm & Blues, swing en rock’n’roll; rauw, verfrissend en opwindend tegelijk! Opgericht in februari 2013 en voortgekomen uit de succesvolle blues formatie “Big Blind”.

De Dave Warmerdam Band

5 jonge muzikanten, die hun liefde voor blues en jazz delen. Het lukt deze band moeiteloos verschillende stijlen en sferen te combineren tot een sound die ook een jonger publiek aanspreekt. Respect voor hoe het was maar ook ruimte voor vernieuwing en eigen interpretatie, een reis door de tijd. Deze band is een must voor de liefhebber van blues, jazz en fusion.

The Cards (UK\NL)

Het is op het eerste gezicht een vreemde combinatie, gitarist Paul Quinn (lid en oprichter van de “British Heavy Metal Godfathers”, Saxon), drummer Koen Herfst, die met DJ Armin van Buuren in meer dan 40 landen op het podium stond en Rock & Jazz bassist\zanger Harrison Young (Ex Doro en Udo Dirkschneider). Ze hebben elkaar in dit power blues trio gevonden, en hoe!

Hollands Blauw

De Nederlandstalige teksten van deze ultieme liveband zijn rauw, lachwekkend, triest en hilarisch herkenbaar. En met een authentieke mix van blues, jazz en rock & roll laten deze zes ervaren muzikanten iedere zaal stampen en dampen. Net als bij de traditionele Delta blues staat de zang en de tekst centraal. Het leverde de band de kwalificatie ‘de kleinkunstenaars van de blues’ op.

Culemborg Blues vindt plaats in het centrum van Culemborg op zaterdag 24 augustus 2019. Op diverse podia, zowel binnen als buiten, spelen ongeveer 20 bands. De toegang is gratis. Meer informatie op www.culemborgblues.nl

Albert Cummings (USA) exclusief naar Culemborg Blues

Het management van Albert Cummings heeft besloten alle optredens in Nederland af te zeggen, met uitzondering van het concert in Culemborg. Het optreden op Culemborg Blues is dus de enige kans hem live te zien.   

Culemborg Blues vindt plaats in het gezellige centrum van Culemborg. Op 8 podia ( zowel binnen als buiten) treden 27 bands voor u op. Omdat het de 25^e editie is en Culemborg viert dat de stad 700 jaar stadsrechten heeft, is er dit jaar een extra dag toegevoegd aan Culemborg Blues.

Op vrijdag 24 augustus trapt de Culemborgse band Key4 af om 18:30 uur in café de Mart. Op het hoofdpodium nemen daarna The Veldman Brothers, The Kings Rhythm Crew ft Matt Schofield (UK) en Popa Chubby (USA) het stokje over. In café de Havenmeester speelt Sweet Mary Jane en in Café Den Tollensthege MOJO HAND. Vanaf middernacht sluiten The Dead Alley Drivers dag 1 af in Café de Mart

Op zaterdag 25 augustus is het om 14:00 uur aan My Brainbox met de top gitaristen Jan Akkerman en Ruben Hoeke om de tweede dag te openen. Er is ook dit jaar weer een breed aanbod, van de jaren 50 West Coast Blues van Harp Mitch & Ticket West tot de eigentijdse bluesrock van MAARIS. Er is Creoolse Blues met Mississippi Delta invloeden van The TWO (CH) en een eerbetoon van Band of Friends aan Rory Gallagher. Om 20.00 uur speelt Albert Cummings (USA) met invloeden van o.a. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Het is zijn eerste en enige optreden in Europa. King King (SCO) en Devon Allman ft Duane Betts (USA) ( ja, hun vaders speelden in de legendarische Allman Brothers Band) sluiten de 25^e editie af.

Nieuw op Culemborg Blues is het VanderMeer VIP deck. Door nieuwe veiligheidseisen en de realisatie van een waterpartij op de markt was een andere indeling van het festivalterrein nodig. Genodigden hebben nu een beter zicht op het hoofdpodium en er is volop gelegenheid tot netwerken.

Ook nieuw is de Culemborg Blues app, die binnenkort via de website en app-store te downloaden is. Je vind er biografieën van de bands, een blokkenschema en je kunt je eigen blokkenschema samenstellen. De app is powered by fullservice wtb- en lasbedrijf MCN (www.mcn.nl)

Internationale bands op 22e Culemborg Blues.

Culemborg Blues heeft ook dit jaar weer een groot aantal buitenlandse acts vastgelegd: Doghouse Sam & his Magnatones (BE), Rusty Roots (BE) Jimi Barbiani Band (IT), Absolution (UK), Kamchatka (SWE), Aaron Keylock (UK), Danny Bryant (UK) en Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys (USA). De 22e Culemborg Blues vindt plaats op 22 augustus in de binnenstad van Culemborg. De toegang is gratis.

Uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk komt de 17 jarige Aaron Keylock. Op 8-jarige leeftijd kreeg hij zijn eerste gitaar, op zijn 11e speelde hij in zijn eerste band. Een jaar later stond hij als headliner in de Charlotte Street Blues Club. Nu is hij 17 en een “must-have” in het Engelse club circuit. Hij trekt door heel Europa en staat in de playlist van menig Amerikaanse radiostation. Onlangs tekende Aaron een platencontract bij Provogue records, waar ook onder andere Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart, Robbert Cray en Walter Trout onder contract staan. Dit Nederlandse Blueslabel ziet dus ook de potentie van dit enorme talent die de bluesrock uit de vroege jaren 70 laat herleven.

Ook van de Britse eilanden: Absolution. In 2010 werden drie muzikanten met een verschillende achtergrond en ieder met een andere stijl werden bij elkaar gezet om een optreden als support-act te verzorgen. Dat beviel zo goed dat men besloot samen verder te gaan. Het blues-rock trio Absolution was geboren. Inmiddels ligt er een live album en zijn er twee studio albums uit. De laatste, “Dusty Road” is wereldwijd uitgebracht. De band heeft een fris eigen geluid waar elementen van Joe Bonamassa en Free in zitten. Absolution weet de energie en enthousiasme van de band op het publiek over te brengen, of ze nu eigen werk spelen of een van de blues klassiekers. Tijdens de 2013 WRC Awards gingen de titels “Best Guitar Solo” en “Ones To Watch” mee naar huis.

Uit Italië de Jimi Barbiani Band, het nieuwe project van Jimi, een van de beste blues-rock slide gitaristen van Europa. Bijna was dat niet zover gekomen, want tot zijn 20e was hij hard op weg profvoetballer te worden bij Udinese. Een ernstige blessure maakte daar een eind die carrière, maar was het begin van een andere. Hij pakte de gitaar van zijn vader en hij bleek talent te hebben. De band is een mix van invloeden van Hendrix, Joe Bonamassa, Jeff Beck, Free en Gov’t Mule. Het explosieve geluid van dit power-trio komt het best tot zijn recht, live, op het podium. Ze creëren een unieke sound waarbij er voor ieder bandlid de ruimte is om er een persoonlijk stempel op te drukken. De speelstijl doet soms denken aan Muddy Waters, soms aan Duane Allman. Goede techniek wordt gecombineerd met de een flinke dosis energie wat vanzelf leidt tot een soort trance bij zowel band als publiek.

De meeste kilometers om in Culemborg te komen worden gemaakt door Johnny Mastro & his Mama’s Boys. De roots van Johnny Mastro liggen in Los Angeles. Inmiddels is New Orleans zijn uitvalsbasis. Vandaaruit wordt een krachtige, eind jaren ’40, begin jaren ’50 Chicago Blues gespeeld. Johnny noemt het “Sledge Hammer Blues”; rauw hard en smerig, maar altijd authentiek en met hart en ziel gebracht. Basgitaar en drums staan als een rots in de branding en die bieden Smokehouse op (slide)gitaar en Johnny op de bluesharp de gelegenheid om de ene solo na de andere het publiek in de zwiepen. Met meer dan 4000 optredens op de teller, een typische live-act met een unieke sound en met geen enkele andere band te vergelijken. Dit moet je minstens een keer gezien hebben.

Culemborg Blues haalt weer internationale bluesartiesten naar Culemborg

Stichting Culemborg Blues heeft recent het complete programma bekend gemaakt van het gratis bluesfestival op 28 augustus in het centrum van Culemborg. Ook dit jaar heeft de organisatie weer indrukwekkende internationale bluesgrootheden weten vast te leggen. The Brew (UK), de opener van vorig jaar, keert dit jaar terug in het hoofdprogramma. Daarnaast staan op 28 augustus Ian Siegal (UK), Innes Sibun (UK), The Saddle Tramps (USA), Michael Dotson (USA), Jay Tamkin Band (UK), Lance Lopez (USA) en Sonny Hunt (USA) & The Dirty White Boys met 2 speciale gasten: Leif de Leeuw en Rory M.I. op het affice.

In 2009 opende The Brew Culemborg Blues. De jongelingen uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk spelen direct de Markt vol. Is dat werkelijk die jonge vent die zo zingt en gitaar speelt? Het is alsof er een doorgewinterde muzikant staat. Het publiek laat zich verbazen en geniet. Hun terugkomst is derhalve onvermijdelijk.
Ian Siegal ging toen hij 16 was regelmatig als roadie met zijn neef mee. Op een avond werd hem heel onverwacht gevraagd om te zingen. Het resultaat was een razend enthousiast publiek en een verrukt (en nogal verbaasd) jong talent met een carriere voor zich. Twee jaar later pakte hij een gitaar vast en leerde zichzelf gitaar spelen. Toen hij 20 was stopte hij met de kunstacademie en reisde naar Berlijn waar hij leefde van wat hij als straatzanger verdiende. Juist toen is zijn gitaarspel enorm verbeterd, want als hij geen geld verdiende, dan had hij niets te eten. Als dat de blues niet is!

Culemborg Blues

Well in just a week the Culemborg Blues will start. They have a great line up. Whit at the end of the fetival performances of Cuby and the Blizzards end JR Band. Cuby I know from my youth. It is the eldest Blues Band of the Netherlands. They perform now over 40 years. They are a very famous band too. If you look them up in Google or MSN searh you will find over 75000 hits. There has been written a lot about them, so I won't do it again overhere, but you can find enough to read about the band,their songs etc. anywhere on the internet.
Jan Rijbroek band I saw earlier this year in Bunnik, while visiting the Blues Route on Tour in Bunnik. You can read about them in one of my earlier posts.

Culemborg Blues Route

Well there is an upcoming free open air Blues Festval on August 26th in Culemborg. Culemborg is a town on the borders of the river Lek, near the motorway A2 between Utrecht and Den Bosch, if you follow the A2 you cant miss it.

Blues at Cees' Place

On August 15th 2006 there will be an open air concert on the Oude Gracht (on the water of the canal) at Cees'Place in association with "Inside Uit".

The Culemborg Bleus festival will take place on August 26th.

And on August 30th 2006, there will be another BAND TRY-OUT NIGHT which starts at 20.00h.

The bands are in order of performance:

This event will take place at Cees' Place Utrecht and the entrance is free. So note this in your schedule and be present at this event

Funk Band "Funk met Peren"

I have a temperoraly collegue at work who is playing the tenor saxophone. He is a member of the Dutch funk band "Funk met Peren". Find out more about this band and its members on the Funk met Peren website.

Quatro Saxofoni

Last weekend on saturday, my daughter had a performance with the Saxofone band Quatro Saxofoni, amongst other they played Watermellon man and Walking Saxophone's. The quartet consists off 1 Baritone, 1 Tenor and 2 Alt Saxophone's. They played well. They performed at the Music and Art school in Utrecht at the Domplein. Thats near the DOM tower in Utrecht. Coming thursday Juni 29th the quartet will perform at the JAzz Night at the same location. The quartet is conducted by Iman spaargaren, who is also the saxophone teacher. I am very proud of my daughter because she just started playing the sax 3 years ago. She play's a green Century Saxophone.

Nigel Mack

Wednesday I met Nigel again at Cees Place, he gave a mini concert there before going on a Tour in Europe, through The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. A full schedule of his tour you can find on www.nigelmack.com
I spoke with Nigel about his last CD -High Price to Play-, and I told him what my favourite numbers are. First favourite is "Letter from the Birmingham Jail". This number is dedicated to MartinLuther King jr and realy gives you goose flesh. It starts with a sample of the wellknow speech op Martin Luther King saying "I Have a dream". Nigel told me the story how much trouble it have cost to find the sample, but when he finaly got it, how it perfectly fitted in the intro and the rythem of the song. It is realy a great blues number written by Nigel himself, it lasts over 7 minutes. 7 minutes of enjoyment. Nigel told me while mixing the speech and the song, he himself got goose flesh.

Another favourite is "Bed Room Eyes", a story of a succesfull man, wife children, good job at the office and he falls in love with the new management assistant.

May 7th Blues Route on Tour

Yesterday evening I went to Brothers at Bunnik to enjoy the Blues Route on Tour.

At first there was a show of the JR Band. I must commit that I've never seen and heard them before, but lately a read about them and what I read made me curious to hear and see the JR Band perform. The Band is a wellknown blues rock band in the circuit and performed with some world famous bands like ZZ Top, Status Quo, Deep Purple, Gary Moore a.o. It was quite a show, and you could see this was a band with lots of experience, professionals, who knew how to act and how to move over the stage. However their style of blues, isnot my kind of blues, in my view its more rock than blues. Never the less I liked there performance.(Visit JR Bands website to listen to their latest CD, learn more about them and find a schedule of their next performances)
Secondly I saw the BX Blues Band, a semi-proffesional band from Holland, which was also present on the Blues Route 2006 in Utrecht. They use a lot of humor in their performance and make quite a show of it. They play more the blues I like. All kinds of blues though, Mississippi, Chicago, a little bit Albert King. They are a cool bunch of guys doing their thing. You must visit their site now and then, to see where their next gig will be. You have to see them. On their site you can also listen to MP3s of some songs. The Bassplayer, Bas, told me they are going to make a new Demo CD, for those who want to book them for their party. Their specialty is "divorce parties", well thats what the singer Henjo told during the show.
The third show came from Arthur Ebeling, also a guy I heard a lot off but never heard or saw him play. So my expectations were high and you know what, he didnt disappoint me. It was even better, great guitar play, and it all looked so smooth and easy, I wished I could play the guitar like that. Arthur played a Gretch hollowbody guitar and as magic the bluessy and jazzy songs came off of its strings. Great, I really liked it. Of coure Arthur has its own website which you should visit to.
And then, last but not least, straight from Canada, his plane has only landed a few hours before there was Nigel Mack with his Blues Attack. He plays all styles of blues, plays the harp, guitar and slide guitar and he also does te vocals. According to Cees from Cees Place Nigel started his European Tour wright that moment in Brothers. Where he will be the coming month you'll find on his website. He did a great performance with songs of his latest album "High Price to Play", of which I bought one which he personally signed. You have to hear him and his band play. One of the songs I liked most is "Bed Room Eyes" and another one is "Letter from Birmingham Jail" which starts with an itro of Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream".
Throughout the night T Bone Fisher (solo) filled in the gaps and breaks. T Bone is from the US and plays an acoustic gutar. He plays the guitar by picking and plucking the strings. T Bone plays country bleus. Also T Bone performed at the Blues Route 2006 in Utrecht. Again he did a good performance.
Well it surely was a great BLUES night, and you should hear and see this bands. And there will be follow ups of this Blues Route on Tour. We have to keep the blues alive. It was a pitty there was such a little audience. But those he did come had a wonderful blues night. So tell your neigbours, tell your freinds, tell your family about this great evening and convince them to come along with you to the next Blues Route on Tour. Its what Brothers deserve, its what Cees deserves, it what the bands deserve, but above all its what the Blues deserves.
For those who can't wait till the next Blues Route on Tour, go and visit Cees Place upcoming Wednesday May 10th, there will be a mini concert there starting at 21:00 hours and ending at approx. 24:00 hours, and in the last hour there will be a performance of Nigel Mack, entrance is free and come and convince yourselves that the BLUES is your thing to.

Jan Rijbroek Band (JR BAND)

You can visit the JR BAND on the web on http://www.jrband.com, which is also the name of their last CD.

The JR Band is a Dutch classic blues rock band from Haarlem, which over the years did support for Gary Moore , ZZ top , Whitesnake , Slash, Santana , Status Quo and many others.

The line up is as follows:

Guitar, Harp and Throat - JR in own person

Keyboards, Accordeon and Organ - Proffessor Frankenstein
Bass and Vocals - Dario Pozderski
Drums and Percusision - Franky Mr. TNT

On the Blues Route 2006 the JR Band performed in Utrecht and Sunday May 7th they will perform on the Blues Route on Tour in Bunnik. Besides that they will do some more performances in Holland, and in august they will be at the Sturgis Festival in the USA with Motley Crue and Steppenwolf.
